"Our children are just not eating enough fish"! Says John Lavery of Fish City in Belfast.

John and Grainne Lavery opened Fish City on Ann Street Belfast last summer and have been winning awards and attracting new customers at a staggering rate for such a new business. However, they have both recognised that when families bring their children for lunch or dinner, the majority are not ordering fish!

"Our children are just not eating enough fish!" Said John. He continued, "To raise the profile and get people talking, we are running a special children's seafood menu aiming to attract interest to this much-loved healthy food option in conjunction with 'Seafood Week'.

"From the 6th to the 13th October, children will have a choice of several difference species of fish to sample, one free meal with every adult meal purchased, as long as they order fish! If they finish their plate, they get a free ice-cream served in an oyster shell wafer!! We are aiming to raise the profile of tasty fish dishes for kids, and encourage children to try one of six different fish dishes available on the menu. They can come in with their parents and try one of these ranging from the traditional fish and chips, to mini fish pie and including spaghetti and prawns with the hope of starting them on their discovery of fish!

"At the Fish City Kids Club, children from local primary schools are invited to learn about the importance of sustainability and protecting our oceans for future generations.

"Our fish is sourced from sustainable waters and Fish City was the first retailer in Ireland to become MSC certified. We are proud gold members of the Marine Conservation Society, and members of Fish2Fork, Sustainable Cities and Green Tourism.

"Seafood is a great source of vitamins and minerals and a number of celebrity chefs have recognised the link between poor food intake and the imbalance of nutrition that they have investigated the outcome of having a poor diet. We showcase the calorie count on our menu and can provide information on our cooking methods including vegan and gluten free if requested. By making an informed decision on food, helps to alleviate obesity as it is the world's fastest-growing health risk with the number ofpeople in Northern Ireland living with Type 1 and Type 2diabetes is now 100,000.
