Belfast Business Fish City Becomes #1 in UK for Healthy and Sustainable Fish & Chips

John and Grainne Lavery opened Fish City in Belfast with the vision of delivering a unique and innovative experience to customers. Sustainability and healthy eating are core to Fish City's ethos.

The restaurant and takeaway has been winning awards since opening and to win the 'National Fish and Chip Shop Awards by Seafish, 2018 Good Catch-The Sustainable Seafish Award' and the 'National Fish and Chip Shop Awards by Seafish 2018 Healthy Eating 'Fish and Chips' Award', has just become the pinnacle of what the couple have been achieving.

John explained how his experience of entering for the award has been a positive journey for him and his team. "Fish City's foundations are based on four buildings blocks: quality of food; sustainability; healthy eating; and education of those principles to its staff, and the general public.

He continued, "Grainne and I have been fully committed to sustainability, protecting our oceans for future generations, and to healthy eating. We firmly believe they are interlinked and an integral part of the Fish City brand and its future growth.

"To win these two awards today, we feel humbled and are truly proud and grateful for this recognition. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our dedicated team at Fish City, without their support and hard work none of this would be possible.

"We also wish to thank the Marine Stewardship Council and the Marine Conservation Society for all of their support and guidance since our opening. Fish City is very proudly the first retailer on the island of Ireland to be MSC certified and the first fish and chip corporate member with the Marine Conservation Society in the United Kingdom.

"Grainne and I have been proactive in building partnerships with various institutions and stakeholders. Among these are the Food Standards Agency, resulting in Fish City being the first independent business to have achieved the 'FSA Calorie Wise accreditation'.

"We continue to work with schools through the Fish City Kids Club, to educate children of the importance of eating fish for a healthy diet and mental well-being. We also actively raise awareness of the importance of sustainability and the protection of our oceans. With our corporate colleagues, we work with local businesses, tourism agencies, food and restaurant associations to promote the fish and chip industry and our core beliefs.

On behalf of everyone at Fish City Belfast, we wish to thank Seafish, the judging panel and the industry. It is a great honour to have Fish City recognised and to take home these two awards to Northern Ireland, as we won over competition from throughout the UK. We thank again our team and look forward to celebrating our achievement.
