Selfridges lists new organic smoked salmon from Ewings Seafood


Top London store Selfridges has placed an order for organic smoked salmon with Ewing's Seafoods in Belfast, Northern Ireland's leading fishmonger. The contract, the first major retail business won by Ewings in Britain, will also benefit Glenarm Organic Salmon in County Antrim, which will supply the fresh fish from its farm in the Irish Sea.



Ewings began supplying the attractively packaged smoked salmon at the start of February following extensive samplings by buyers at Selfridges in Oxford Street, one of London's leading food halls.



The Belfast fishmonger, established in 1911, cures the fresh salmon using a unique family recipe in its own kiln at its processing plant in the Shankill Road area of Belfast.Ewing's uses traditional techniques to smoke the salmon slowly over a fragrant mix of beech and oak wood chips.



Crawford Ewing, a director of the family owned and managed business, says: "Winning our first retail business in Britain with one of the most respected providers of premium food is a marvellous boost for us. It's a tremendous endorsement of the taste, texture and natural aroma of our smoked salmon.



"We intend to support the business with Selfridges by a programme of samplings in the food hall and to work closely with the team there to raise awareness, particularly among devotees of good food in Britain, about the organic salmon which we source from Glenarm and smoke slowly in our own kiln to create a distinctively rich and natural flavour.



"The business will also benefit us as we seek to build on our recent success in supplying a foodservice operation in Dubai and to expand our international sales. We have identified opportunities for our smoked salmon especially in the US and Asia, now a major customer of UK smoked salmon.



"We've also invested extensively in facilities that have enabled us to increase production of premium smoked salmon and to meet the requirements of high-end retailers such as Selfridges," he adds. "We believe that Northern Ireland can offer the finest seafood in the world.



"What sets our smoked salmon apart is superb quality that comes from the Glenarm fish farm location in the cold, tidal waters of the Irish Sea, which produces a highly textured and delicious fish that we cure carefully using a traditional and natural technique developed by my grandfather, who started the business, over a century ago.



Ewing's Seafoods is now the leading supplier of a wide range of seafoods, mostly sourced from Northern Irish trawlers based at Kilkeel in County Down, to leading hotels and restaurants on a daily basis.
