HAIRY BIKERS SAVOUR NORTHERN IRELAND ARTISAN BREADS

Two traditional breads from Northern Ireland will feature in the forthcoming ???Hairy Bikers Food Tour of Britain' television series, presented by Hairy Bikers Simon King and Frank Myers.
Viewers will be shown how to make Boxty, an Irish potato pancake, and soda bread, both of which are usually served as part of a traditional Ulster Fry breakfast. The popular bikers serve Boxty with unique Fermanagh Black Bacon from O'Doherty's Fine Meats in Enniskillen and soda bread with a traditional Ulster Fry breakfast of pork sausages, eggs, bacon and black pudding. The Hairy Bikers, who spent a week traveling around Northern Ireland sampling local food particularly in counties Fermanagh and Antrim, will be showing viewers how to make the distinctively Irish breads in the show when it airs on September 3rd at 5.15pm on BBC2. The bikers chose two of Northern Ireland's most popular castle attractions ??" Crom Castle in County Fermanagh and Carrickfergus Castle in County Antrim - as their culinary locations. The show's focus follows the successes of local bakeries in the influential Great Taste Awards 2009, the competition run by the UK Guild of Fine Food. Several Northern Ireland companies secured gold awards for artisan breads including soda farls and potato cakes. Boxty is a traditional Irish potato pancake from the Fermanagh and Tyrone in Northern Ireland and Mayo, Sligo, Donegal (where it is know locally as Poundy or Poundies), Leitrim and Cavan. Fermanagh Black Bacon is produced by O'Doherty's Fine Meats in Enniskillen from the company's own herd of pigs and using traditional dry curing techniques. As the interest in Irish cuisine has increased, so the popularity of Boxty has risen. Soda Bread, made from bicarbonate of soda, is also benefiting from the growing interest in artisan breads throughout the UK.
