Blas na hEireann recognises role of the late Shane McArdle

The outstanding contribution to the food and drink industry in Ireland by the late Shane McArdle of Invest NI was recognised and acclaimed at the recent Blas na hEireann - Irish National Food Awards - in Dingle, county Kerry by the launch of a new perpetual award.

Shane, who was Head of Food & Drink Business Development in the Middle East & International markets died suddenly last year. He had formerly been actively involved in Blas na hEireann especially in encouraging Northern Ireland food and drink companies to participate in this important competition.

Shane's role was marked by Blas na hEireann founder Artie Clifford during the final stage when he praised Shane's support over many years and announced that the Best in Ulster Award would henceforth be known as The Shane McArdle Best in Ulster Award.

Mr Clifford, who launched the competition in 2017, said: "The creation of this perpetual award is well deserved recognition of Shane's tremendous commitment to the food and drink industry in Ireland and especially for his longstanding and dedicated support for Blas na hEireann. This contribution resulted in Northern Ireland companies achieving a record number of awards in 2017."

The first winner of the Shane McArdle Award was Burren Balsamics, an artisan business at Richhill in county Armagh, a producer of fruit flavoured balsamic vinegars. The award was presented by Oonagh McArdle, Shane's sister, to Susie Hamilton Stubber of Burren Balsamics. Shane's parents and brother were also present at the ceremony.
