wheaten toasts from Northern Irish artisan bakery

Northern Irish artisan bakery Our Daily Bread has launched 'Twice Baked Irish Wheaten Toasts' especially as an accompaniment for cheese, pate or dips.

The hand-made crisp wheaten thins are the latest development from the small bakery which has won awards for its fresh wheaten and soda breads and mixes for home baking enthusiasts.

The new Toasts are pure wheaten and do not contain yeast, artificial flavourings or preservatives. They are also virtually fat-free.

All the ingredients, which include wholemeal, course ground flour, wheatgerm and dried buttermilk, are sourced from Northern Ireland suppliers. They are supplied in 90g packs and retail at £2.99.

Managing director Melanie Gilfillan, who founded the artisan bakery in 2012, says the crisp bread thins, are twice baked to bring out "the natural nutty flavours" and are "perfect for cheeseboards especially goat's cheese".

The Belfast-based baker, who uses traditional Irish bread making recipes, has a distribution deal with Hider Foods, one of Britain's leading food distribution businesses.

Hider is marketing the company's award winning Irish wheaten loaf, generally known in Britain as brown soda bread.

Mrs Gilfillan adds: "We've been looking at additional products for range based on our successful wheaten breads. Acrisp bread was an obvious way to proceed.

"We trialled the wheaten thins with leading delis and were encouraged by the very positive feedback."

The company's wheaten bread gained Great Taste Awards in 2013 and 2014 and is also sold in the Republic of Ireland as well as in delis and independent retailers in Northern Ireland.

In addition to its wheaten bread, the company has also developed a Bake it Yourself Irish Soda Bread, another longstanding traditional Irish bread and is planning to add a similar potato bread product.
