Top 'Green' award for Northern Irish red meat processor
Leading Northern Irish red meat processor Linden Foods has been
named 'Green Company of the Year'.
The company, based at Dungannon in county Tyrone, won the award for its commitment and the environment and sustainability in Northern
Ireland's top business awards - the annual Ulster Television
Business Eye Awards.
Mael Wilford, environmental manager at Linden Foods, commenting on
the award says: "We are delighted to be voted 'Green Company of the Year'. We have really enjoyed the environmental and sustainable
journey we have been on since we established our Greentrack strategy.
"To win an accolade of this stature is a testament to the great
efforts and major difference we are making as a whole company. We
are all passionate about what we do and how we do it. We have
trusted and established relationships with our farmers, customers
and colleagues. We pride ourselves on putting the customer at the
heart of the business and doing it right first time every time."
Linden Foods, part of the Fane Valley Group of Armagh, has
substantially reduced its carbon footprint for example, following a ?1 million investment. Fane Valley is Northern Ireland's biggest
farmers' co-operative.
Linden has also signed the first Prosperity Agreement in conjunction with the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA), which also saw construction of the Linergy energy plant beside Linden Foods'
factory. Linergy is a renewable energy company which develops
renewable fuels from organic waste.
Prosperity Agreements are arrangements that allow the NIEA and
organisations to explore opportunities to reduce negative
environmental impacts. It was signed by Linden to demonstrate its
commitment to improving its environmental performance.
As part of the deal, Linden Foods has agreed to:
• Reduce its carbon emissions by 25 per cent;
• Reduce its energy and water use, as well as minimising general
waste;
• Work to improve on-farm sustainability and the complete products; and
• Create a local stakeholder forum where key issues can be discussed in a constructive way.
Significant financial investment made in refrigeration and heat
recovery and the time invested in other elements of the Prosperity
Agreement such as the Stakeholder Forum are clear demonstrations of the company's intentions to ensure it is a market leader and
responsible business.
