Northern Irish Milgro in line for UK award

Milgro, Northern Ireland's only commercial grower of onions, is
among 11 business across the United Kingdom to be shortlisted for
the finals of Local Business Accelerators (LBA) - the regional
campaign to boost smaller companies.

Based at Limavady in county Derry, Milgro has been growing and
packing onions since 1989 and already supplies major retailers
including Sainsbury, Tesco, the Co-Op and Asda.

A family business, Milgro supplies a range of onions including
crispy onions such as Crispy Tobacco Onions and Crispy Chilli Onionsas well as traditional brown onions, red onions, shallots and
garlic.

LBA is a campaign involving around 500 UK local newspapers to
promote the growth of smaller and young businesses. Fronted by
Dragons' Den's Deborah Meaden, the initiative offers small
businesses aged between one and five years old the opportunity to
win a free advertising campaign in their local paper as well as
dedicated mentoring support from local business leaders.

Milgro was nominated by Farming Life supplement in Northern Ireland.
The businesses that are deemed to be the most promising will then goforward to a national competition and the winner of that will win
a local ad campaign devised by a top London creative agency and alsoa year's mentoring from Meaden. Readers will have an opportunity to cast their votes in the People's Choice.

One outstanding business will go on to be crowned the overall winner of the competition and claim a prize package which includes
business mentoring and free advertising in their local paper, as
well as ?1,000 worth of business advice from an ICAEW chartered
accountant and free entry to three CBI events for small businesses. The overall LBA winner and People's Choice winner will be announced on Thursday 31 March.
