Survey shows strength of food and drink industry

Ten of the top 50 most profitable companies in Northern Ireland are in food, a new survey of the regional economy shows. Poultry
processor Moy Park is the top listed food company at number five in the study by the Belfast Telegraph sponsored by business consultantsArthur Cox.

The survey of the largest profit earning companies reflects the
continuing strength of Northern Ireland's food and drink industry
currently celebrated Year of Food and Drink this year.

Moy Park in fact is the top manufacturing business in the survey in terms of pre-tax profits. It follows financial service and utility
companies. The processor, based at Craigavon in county Armagh, is
Northern Ireland's only ?1 billion manufacturing business.

Old Bushmills Irish Whiskey, based at Bushmills in county Antrim, isthe leading drink producer and is at 12 in the top 50 in the survey.Food wholesalers and distributors John Henderson (Spar),
Newtownabbey, county Antrim and the SHS Group, Belfast, are at 13
and 17 respectively.

Other Northern Ireland food companies in the top 50 are Hilton (NI) (29), Carrickfergus, county Antrim, part of Hilton Foods UK,
Coca Cola Bottlers (32), Lisburn, county Antrim, part of
Switzerland's Hellenic Bottlers, and Manderley Food (45), owner of
Tayto Crisps in Tandragee, county Armagh.

Northern Ireland-owned companies Fane Valley Co-operative of Armagh is listed at 49 and Dunbia of Dungannon, county Tyrone, one of the
UK's largest meat processors, is at 50.
