Low calorie bread range from Northern Irish bakery

Irwin's, Northern Ireland's largest independent bakery, has developed a new pan bread range which is low in sugar and fat with less than 60 calories per slice.

The company, based at Craigavon in county Armagh, is now supplying the 'Better You' branded loaf to retailers and independents in both white and wholemeal versions. Irwin's Better You 600g white and wholemeal loaves retail at around £1.20.

Noeline McCooey, Irwin's head of technical and NPD, commenting on the new range, says:

"We know consumers consider bread a staple in the weekly shop. However, we understand today's shopper is increasingly health-conscious and in search of variety, so we created the Better You range to give shoppers a lower calorie option for our popular pan breads.

"Our ethos at Irwin's Bakery is to promote a healthy lifestyle, with our breads very much part of this - therefore we keep health as a key focus when investing in new product development and creating new lines.

"As well as being low in sugar, the white loaf is a source of protein and the wholemeal high in fibre," she adds.

Irwin's Bakery is a family owned and managed business that was established in Portadown, county Armagh in 1912.

It moved to the current 100,000 sq ft premises outside Portadown in 1995 and employs around 450 people producing a portfolio of breads across four brands: Irwin's, Irwin's Joeys, Rankin Selection, and Howell's.
