New sourdough bread from top UK artisan baker

Award-winning Northern Irish baker Robert Ditty has added to his popular healthy sourdough bread.

The master baker, who runs two successful artisan bakeries in Northern Ireland, has introduced a new seeded sourdough bread featuring linseeds, pumpkin and sunflower seeds baked in a recently introduced high-tech oven.

His business, Ditty's Home Bakery, has two popular shops in county Derry, in the rural centres of Castledawson and Magherafelt, and is among the most highly regarded in the UK and Ireland.

He has also won widespread acclaim for his traditional Northern Irish breads, especially his soda farls, potato cakes and brown soda bread.

"We've seen steady sales since we first introduced our first sourdough bread," Mr Ditty says. 'We decided to build on the bread's standing as a healthier option by introducing a tasty new seeded sourdough. And feedback from customers has been very positive. Our state-of-the-art oven really makes a difference enabling us to bake bread that is consistently delicious," he adds.

The bakery uses a liquid sour from one of the world's leading suppliers to provide stability, consistency and, of course, the distinctive taste and texture.

Mr Ditty, UK Baker of the Year in the Bakery Industry Awards in 2011, is a second generation artisan baker who is committed to using local ingredients in his products, where possible.

The products combine natural ingredients with traditional baking techniques and time honoured recipes. In particular, Ditty's famous oatcake range reflects his close relationship with producers throughout Ireland.

The bakery exports products, especially its oatcakes, internationally, and was established in 1963 by Robert Ditty's father. The business has continued to grow strongly under Robert Ditty's leadership and skills as a master baker and entrepreneur. High-end retailers stocking his products include Fortnum and Mason in London.

Ditty's Bakery employs over 70 people and has won numerous awards for its products. In addition to its two shops, the bakery supplies bread and other products to cafes and delis across Northern Ireland.
