Queen's Award for Northern Irish Elmgrove Foods

Elmgrove Foods, the Northern Irish producer and exporter of beef, lamb and pork offal products to customers across the world, has won a prestigious Queen's Award for Enterprise.

The company gained the award in the International Trade category for a significant increase in sales to countries worldwide where there is a tradition of using the whole animal.

Based at Dungannon, county Tyrone, Elmgrove is a first time Queen's Award winner. It has grown its overseas sales by 217 per cent over the last three years.

Elmgrove's research identified a specific global demand for innovative offal products, products that would not sell in the UK market. In four years the company both

created and supplied a portfolio of more than 80 products into South East Asian countries such as Vietnam and Hong Kong, which together comprising 82 per cent of total sales turnover. It is now targeting China as its next big market.

The company began with just eight products in 2008, but gradual progression along with continuous research and development, has meant the product range grew rapidly and now exceeds eighty different products within beef, lamb and pork sectors.

The growth of the company has been helped massively by the strong allegiances that have been formed with suppliers which include some of the UK's largest abattoirs and boning factories.

Elmgrove moved into Europe in a bid to extend the supply chain further.

In March 2010, Elmgrove Foods was awarded the 'Export Initiative of the Year Award' at the Meat and Poultry Processing Awards held in Birmingham.

This was the first year of the awards, and the purpose of the new awards was to give processors the opportunity to shine; aiming to reward best practise across the processing sector.
