Ewing Ninth Northern Irish in Top 50 UK Foods
Ewing Seafoods in Belfast, Northern Ireland's oldest fishmonger, has had a fish product listed by an expert panel of judges in the Top 50 British Foods, an event organised by the UK Guild of Fine Food as part of the annual Great Taste Awards. The listing is the ninth for Northern Ireland in the prestigious food event.
Ewing gained the listing for its pale smoked cod loins in the judging. The judges said: "These cod loins are prepared and smoked to a 100-year-old family recipe by Belfast fishmonger Ewing's. The texture is perfectly flaky, almost gelatinous. The wood smokiness is well balanced with salt and fish flavour. A stunning piece of smoked cod."
The smoked cod was listed in the top three star category in the UK Great Taste Awards earlier in the month. Ewing's also gained gold stars from the judges for its Scottish smoked salmon and Glenarm organic smoked salmon.
Based on the Shankill Road in Belfast, Ewing Seafoods has been providing a broad range of seafood to shoppers and to leading hotels and restaurants in Northern Ireland since 1911.
Ewing began business providing fish to workers on the Titanic and today continues to provide fish to foodservice operators in the Titanic Signature Building.
The company also supplies Glenarm Organic smoked salmon to Selfridges in London. In addition, the company supplies smoked salmon to foodservice operators in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Crawford Ewing, a director in the family business, commenting on the listing in the Top 50, says: "This is a marvellous endorsement of the premium quality and outstanding taste of our cod, which we source from local fishing trawlers and smoke slowly in our kiln in Belfast using traditional artisan techniques.
"We are delighted to achieve this nomination especially since it was our first entry in the UK Great Taste Awards. I am convinced it will be of enormous benefit as we seek to expand business outside Northern Ireland."
