Northern Irish successes at World Cheese Awards
Two Northern Irish dairies have won medals at the prestigious World Cheese Awards 2013, an event held as part of BBC Good Food Show in Birmingham.
The Northern Ireland winners were Dale Farm, the region's biggest dairy co-operative which makes cheese at Cookstown in Tyrone, and Fivemiletown Creamery, a speciality cheese producer, also from county Tyrone.
Dale Farm gained four medals as follows:
Silver for Dromona Traditional Creamery Cheddar Flavour 2;
Bronze for Dromona Extra Mature Cheddar Traditional Flavour 3
Bronze for Dromona Extra Mature Cheddar Sweeter Flavour 2
Bronze for Dromona Medium Cheddar Traditional Flavour 2
Fivemiletown Creamery gained two awards as follows:
Silver for Boilie Goat's Cheese
Bronze for Boilie Goat's Cheese Pearls with Tomato and Herbs
World Cheese Awards 2013 are the world's biggest and most respected cheese awards. The event at the NEC, Birmingham attracted almost 3,000 cheeses from over 30 countries.
Successful cheeses faced rigorous judging by more than 260 expert judges who travelled from over 23 countries to taste the most outstanding cheeses in the world. Judges represented 23 countries including Australia, the USA, Japan, South Africa, Canada, Brazil, Belgium, Spain, Portugal, Tenerife, Russia, Italy, France, Switzerland, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Sweden, Mexico, plus of course England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.
The event included cheese expert workshops and opportunities for the general public to taste the cheeses.
